Job Description Summary
The Haque Lab at the Medical University of South Carolina and the Veterans Affairs plans to examine (a) Immune Evasion by B-cell Lymphoma, and (b) Neuroimmune aspects of neurodegenerative events using in vitro and in vivo systems. This Research Specialist I position will involve providing technical assistance to the Principal Investigator in inflammation, cancer, and neurodegeneration research, as well as supporting lab protocols and routine lab maintenance.

Job Description
  • Directly responsible for experimental sample preparation and analysis using biochemical, immunological, and molecular assays on blood samples, fresh tissue, and cultured cells. (30%)
  • Responsible for daily operations to include the efficient use of instrumentation, ordering, shipments, and inventory of laboratory supplies. (25%)
  • Participate in research with animal models, tissue culture, gene transfer in primary and established cell lines. (25%)
  • Responsible for preparation of experimental reports, assisting with lab protocols, manuscripts, and grants as they arise. (20%)

Preferred Experience and Training Requirements:
A bachelor's degree in biology or other life or health care science with biology research experience.
Additional Knowledge, Skill and Ability Preferred:
Perform experiments as assigned by the Principal Investigator. Assist and provide skilled technical support, analyze and record results/data, participate in development of experimental procedures, mouse and rat handling, and maintain inventory of laboratory supplies.
VA Requirements:

RESEARCH SPECIALIST I
Performs complex laboratory procedures and qualitative tests. Teaches and supervises
performance of less complex laboratory procedures. Performs complex radiochemical,
biological, biochemical, etc. examinations. Operates and maintains a variety of mechanical,
electrical and optical laboratory equipment. Performs routine examination and testing of human
subjects for research purposes. Prepares laboratory animals for experimental procedures
and/or surgery and performs surgical procedures as instructed. Supervises care and breeding of
experimental animals. Refines and standardizes existing experimental procedures; participates
in development of new procedures. Records and analyzes results of research experiments or
procedures. Conducts library searches and other research of scientific literature.
