com/administration/page/fire-department-training-officer The purpose of this job within the organization is to plan, coordinate and implement an effective fire service training program to help ensure the life safety of all fire personnel on the fire ground and to meet OSHA, ISO, and other agency training requirements.
This position works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Essential Job Functions:
Plans, develops, coordinates, and conducts fire training programs such as basic fire training for recruits, ISO training, and specialized fire/rescue training.
Develops lesson plans, manuals, and study guides; secures and supervises the use of training aids.
Assists in administering written and practical skills exams for promotional purposes, and in developing promotion procedures.
Assists in the development of minimum standards of fire training and standard operating procedures.
Prepares and maintains records and reports related to fire training.
Assists Chief, Deputy Chiefs and Battalion Chiefs during emergency responses; performs the role of safety officer during fire, rescue and other emergency responses, when assigned by Incident Commander and/or Chief Officer.
Responsible for department's Hazardous Materials Response Duties to include, but not limited to; related certifications, atmospheric monitoring equipment and accessories, constant state of response readiness, etc.
Attends required training courses and seminars.
Attends national, regional, state, and local conferences, conventions, and other meetings to remain knowledgeable of modern firefighting methods and administration; maintains knowledge of all local, state and federal codes, laws and regulations pertaining to fire service.
Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Some knowledge of the geographical layout of the City, including streets and principle buildings.
Knowledge of Hazardous Materials Emergency Response.
Ability to effectively operate as a Lead Fire Instructor and conduct multiple types of training evolutions to include, but not limited to Fire, Medical, and Rescue.
Ability to organize, instruct, coordinate various training programs such as Recruit Training Program, Specialty Training Programs, etc.
Ability to obtain Instructor Certifications for multiple fire department related disciplines.
Ability to identify life safety hazards associated with multiple types of emergency operations and recommend effective remedial action.
Ability to effectively communicate with supervisor and coworkers.
Ability to express ideas clearly, orally and in writing.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions quickly and correctly; demonstrates effective computer skills.
Ability to communicate with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers.
Personally, demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
Work is performed onsite.
The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Educational and Experience
Qualifications:
Recommend an associate degree or specialized courses/training equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college in fire science/technology or related field.
Requires two years of responsible experience and training in fire service programs or closely related experience.
The equivalent combination of training and related work experience may be considered.

Ability to respond to emergencies effectively, to changes effectively, and to directives effectively.

Work is conducted primarily in an office setting.
Work involves some travel and frequent attendance at meetings, including many that may be conducted during the evening or on weekends, and irregular hours as necessary to meet deadlines and achieve objectives.
Occasionally, must be able to perform work in a variety of weather conditions.
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
Must have adequate depth perception, visual acuity, visual stamina, and auditory perception.
Ability to understand department rules and regulations, City of Hanahan rules and regulations and standard operating procedures and the ability to help formulate same.
