Job Description
Job Duties:
  • 20% - Maintain inventory and supplies for tissue culture laboratory. Maintain tissue culture database and perform data analysis. Tissue culture responsibilities include: maintaining multiple cell lines, perform various in vitro experiments including stimulation studies, proliferation assays, and migration assays.
  • 20% - Perform biochemical techniques such as: Polymerase Chain Reaction, Western blotting, zymography, ELISA, radio-immunoassays, and multiplex assays. Develop anesthetic and surgical skills commensurate with full humane care and use of animals with respect to murine cardiovascular surgery.
  • 20% - Provide assistance and engagement in the biochemistry laboratory and the murine physiology laboratory. Maintain inventory, supplies, and database in order to perform data analysis for the murine physiology laboratory.
  • 15% - Perform aortic aneurysm inductions in murine models on a reproducible basis, both in standard strains and in transgenic lines. Maintain husbandry of murine systems which includes identification and selection of transgenic lines and preparation for cardiovascular studies.
  • 10% - Collect biological samples for research from experimental subjects and assist in processing as necessary. Perform echocardiography on murine systems and maintain data recordings.
  • 10% - Maintain computer system that holds husbandry information and update research protocols as necessary.
  • 5% - Assist in other procedures and duties as defined by supervisor.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:
A high school diploma and two years work experience in a clinical or research setting; a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science may be substituted for the two years of required experience.

Ability to lift 40 lbs. centrifuge rotors from floor level to height of 40 inches, then down 20 inches into centrifuge drum, unassisted. (Infrequent)
Ability to lift 25 lbs. boxes, from floor level to maximum height of 72 inches, unassisted. (Infrequent)
Ability to push/pull file boxes from one location to another at floor level. (Frequent)
Ability to maneuver heavy equipment on bench tops, 50 lbs. or greater, unassisted. (Frequent)
Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous)
Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous)
Ability to match or discriminate between colors, normally. (Continuous)
Ability to hear and recognize various alarms emitting from work area systems. (Continuous)
Ability to hear and/or understand conversations. (Continuous)
Ability to work in a darkroom for processing film, etc. (Continuous)
Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and annually. (Continuous)
