Overview
The American Heritage Society is moving to the Charleston, SC area and seeks both a Director of Education and staff to continue development of Fourscore (4score.org), a large, national website providing resources for teaching U.S. History, Government, and English Language Arts.
Fourscore is an innovative, easy-to-use system that offers access to more than 7,000 essays by historians that are bundled with primary sources to meet the needs of teachers in grades 7-12, including AP courses. The system includes a large amount of professional development materials for teachers, and is aligned with Common Core State Standards and the new C3 Social Studies standards.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for Social Studies and/or ELA and be experienced in developing curriculum , especially for history and government. Some familiarity with STEM subjects would be an important plus, as the Society is also developing a system of education resources on the history of technology and innovation aimed at encouraging K-12 students to follow careers in STEM fields .
This is a full-time position. A consulting arrangement may be possible initially, but as a team leader the Director of Education will need to be in the office frequently for meetings.
Description of Project
The Society is combining the extraordinary vault of nonfictional narratives from our magazine archives together with relevant primary sources to create one-stop shopping for digital resources for teachers of Social Studies, English Language Arts, and STEM education. Content already includes thousands of essays by historians, plus thousands of primary documents such as speeches, newspaper articles, letters, court decisions and testimony, photographs, paintings, and artifacts.
A panel of master teachers have created bundles of content that include one or more essays by a historian, plus 8-12 primary documents relating to that topic, as well as teacher-to-teacher coaching, and specific tasks (and models of the tasks) that can be done with the content in the classroom. The resources have text complexity metrics and extensive links to both CCSS and the new C3 Standards for Social Studies.
Over the last half century, many of the preeminent writers of the time wrote for American Heritage. Not only leading historians, but respected authors such as Malcolm Cowley, John F. Kennedy, John Dos Passos, Archibald McLeish, and Wallace Stegner. More recently, some of our 1,800 authors have included Edward L. Ayers, Jean H. Baker, Douglas Brinkley, Joseph J. Ellis, David Hackett Fischer, Eric Foner, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Annette Gordon-Reed, Pauline Maier, David McCullough, James M. McPherson, Alan Taylor, and Gordon Wood
Our two integrated digital resources will be rolled out in the nation's largest school districts beginning in Summer 2015, serving thousands of schoolteachers and benefiting as many as one million students. For more information, see 4score.org.
