Surgical Technician

Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex surgical setups. Assists team members with care of the patient, i.e. positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies. Assesses equipment needs and maintains adequate stock of supplies and materials. Sets up sterile field with all required items. Handles instruments, supplies and equipment during surgical procedure. Utilizes universal precautions. Follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies and equipment. Prepares prosthesis and surgical devices. Handles specimens appropriately. Orients new operating room scrub staff in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments, and OR procedures. Immediately cleans reusable medical equipment. Recognizes potentially hazardous situations. Assists surgical team members in quality improvement activities. Updates personal knowledge regarding current trends in surgical technology through in services and continuing education. Performs other duties, of a related nature, as assigned Work Schedule:

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note:

Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
1) Plans and discusses procedure with surgical team and assures that all supplies and equipment are available. 2) Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex surgical setups. 3) Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies and equipment. 4) Check instruments and equipment prior to use for sterility and proper functioning. 5) Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. 6) Assists surgical team members in quality improvement activities. OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one (1) full year of graduate education (or 18 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Applicants may also combine graduate education and experience as described above to qualify at this level. You must have equivalent combinations of experience and successfully completed graduate level education obtained through an accredited college or university that included courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements:
Duties performed require operating room attire with the possibility of exposure to anesthesia gasses, methyl methacrylate, x-rays, blood and bodily fluids which can be infectious. Appropriate scrub attire includes sterile gown and gloves, surgical cap and mask. Incumbent is often required to wear special attire such as a helmet used during total joint replacements. Must wear protective eyewear such as goggles or face shield. The incumbent must be able to frequently wear a 20-30 pound lead apron for radiation protection. The operating room can be a stressful work environment. Maintaining calm and ability to work under pressure is a must. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
